President William Ruto has said that his administration is considering building a low-altitude stadium in Mombasa.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony of the construction of Talanta Sports City, at Jamhuri grounds on Friday, Ruto said the facility will help Kenya's sportsmen and women to train, in a low-altitude area.

The President explained that before they settled on having Talanta Sports City at Jamhuri, there were suggestions to have it built in Mombasa.

"We are seriously considering another stadium in Mombasa. There was a huge debate as to whether we should have this facility here or in Mombasa," Ruto said.

"For reasons that I was persuaded, we decided that this facility will be here but we will equally find a place in Mombasa to do a good stadium that will be a low altitude stadium, which will support our sportsmen in both athletics and other games to train in low altitude facilities in Mombasa."

The Head of state noted that the construction of stadiums is one step toward actualising the Bottom-up transformation of sports and the creative industry in the country.

He added that renovation will soon begin at the Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums in Nairobi.

He also said Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega and the Kipchoge Stadium will cater for the 2027 AFCON games.

The construction and renovation of the country's stadiums will also be supervised by the Ministry of Defence.

Ruto directed CS Aden Duale to ensure there are weekly supervision visits and that the set timelines are met as agreed.

He said that in his capacity as president, he will visit the site every three months until it is complete.

"I have agreed with the ministries, and that is why the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Defence are also represented here because we want this stadium to be built to world-class standard using military discipline," Ruto said.

"I will expect our defence team, Aden Duale, the CDF and the team to make sure all the timelines we have agreed are kept by the contractor and I expect that there will be supervision every week, every two weeks and I will be here myself every three months until this facility is completed."
