  • • The coalition insisted that the current taxation is hurting the Kenyan economy.

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance now says that the heavy taxation by the Kenya Kwanza administration is a punishment to Kenyans.

Speaking on Tuesday after an Azimio summit meeting, the Opposition coalition said that the current tax burden is unreasonable.

In a press statement read by Jubilee party's Jeremiah Kioni, Azimio said that the President William Ruto-led government is failing the test of caring for the people of Kenya.

The coalition insisted that the current taxation is hurting the Kenyan economy.

"The summit maintains the view that the tax burden being borne by Kenyans is unreasonable and unsustainable. The Kenya Kwanza regime is failing the test of being caring and compassionate. Paying taxes should never be a punishment but a patriotic duty. Under the Kenya Kwanza regime, taxation is a punishment that is hurting the entire economy," Azimio said.

The coalition party added that it remains opposed to the 16 per cent tax on petroleum products that was imposed by Kenya Kwanza.

Petroleum products under the previous regime attracted a Value-Added Tax (VAT) of 8 per cent.

"We remain opposed to the housing tax.

"We are deeply opposed to the high PAYE rates that Kenyan workers are forced to endure. We remain opposed to the subjection of the retiree pensions to taxation."

Azimio also said that it remains firmly opposed to the subjecting of farm produce to taxation.

"It is our position that forcing farmers to part with Sh5 for every Sh100 they make from their farm produce is unreasonable and cruel. We encourage our farmers to resist this tax with all their might."

The Azimio Summit meeting held at the SKM Center was attended by Azimio leader Raila Odinga, Wiper boss Kalonzo Musyoka, DAPK Party Leader Eugine Wamalwa and former Murang'a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria.

Others were PNU Party Leader Peter Munya, ODM Deputy Party Leader Wycliffe Oparanya, Roots boss George Wajackoyah and National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi.

Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua was reportedly in Tanzania.

Other issues discussed at the Summit include the adoption of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report by the National Assembly and also Raila's candidature for the African Union Commission chairmanship.
