President William Ruto has appointed the Secretary General of the East African Community Peter Mutuku Mathuki as ambassador to Russia.

According to a notification by the Office of the President on Friday, the EAC Secretary General will now serve the country in Moscow as ambassador joining the ranks of the nation's foreign service.

Mutuku was nominated as part of the new appointments and nominations in the foreign service.

The president has already transmitted the nominations to the National Assembly for consideration and approval by Parliament.

Once approved, the appointees will serve as ambassadors and representatives in the various roles.

Since his assumption to office, Mathuki has provided strategic leadership and facilitation for new dimensions in the EAC Secretariat; through deepening and the expansion of the Community, with the recent admission of the Democratic Republic of Congo and pursuing peace and security efforts in some troubled parts of the region.

He served as the Chief Executive Officer of the East African Business Council (EABC), (2018-2021).

Mathuki was instrumental in driving and articulating the Private Sector priorities in EAC decision-making processes.

He spearheaded many regional, continental and international high-level public-private dialogues which resulted in the resolution of bottlenecks hindering the growth of intra-EAC trade and investment.

Mathuki served as a Member of Parliament of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), (2012-2017).

During this time, he chaired the EALA Committee responsible for Good Governance, and served in the Committees of Accounts and Trade & Investment.
