Kisii County Deputy Governor Robert Monda awaits the start of the hearing of his impeachment at the Senate chambers on March.13th.2024/

A son of a family whose father allegedly bribed Kisii deputy governor Robert Monda Sh800,000 to secure him a job broke down as he narrated how he sold his family business to raise the funds.

This is even as the Kisii county assembly exposed how the besieged deputy governor persuaded and received the bribe from the family of Joseph Misati.

In an emotional submission before the senators hearing Monda’s impeachment case, Dennis Mokaya revealed how he sold his salon to raise Sh800,000 to bribe the deputy governor to secure him a job.

Misati was desperately seeking a job for their son, Mokaya, when they reached out to Monda, said to be along-term friend, who promised to help him secure a job.

According to Mokaya, Monda had promised to help his father secure him (Mokaya) a job – a commercial manager – at the Gusii Water and Sanitation Company.

Mokaya spoke when he took the witness stand for the county assembly that is seeking to kick out the deputy governor over gross violation of the constitution, abuse of office, gross misconduct and crimes under national law.

The MCAs laid bare the case before the Senate plenary where they paraded witnesses to sustain their case against the deputy governor.

Today Monda, through his lawyers, will take the floor to defend himself against the allegations.

The senators will vote later in the evening to determine Monda’s fate. At least 24 out of the 47 senators will be required to vote in favour of any of the four charges to uphold Monda’s removal.

Interestingly, Mokaya’s father, is the lead witness for the deputy governor.

In his submission before the senators, Mokaya said he received a communication from his father sometime last year, informing him of Monda’s promise to help him secure a job at GWASCO.

However, the deputy governor asked for Sh800,000. At the time, Mokaya said he was living in Nairobi.

He later traveled to their rural home in Kisii where they met the deputy governor at his residence.

It was at that point that the deputy governor reportedly asked for the bribe. He said he and his wife were forced to sell their family business in Ruai at Sh500,000 to raise funds to bribe the county official.

“I was working as a marketer in Nairobi but we were also running a family business in Ruai,” Mokaya said.

Asked by the lead lawyer of the county assembly Elias Mutuma why he has taken a different stand from his father in the case, Mokaya said; “If my father chooses friendship over truth, [then] let it be so,” Mokaya said.
