President William Ruto now says that the state is working on setting up a mechanism to enable Kenyans working online to receive their payments on Mpesa.
Speaking on Tuesday, Ruto said the move will make it easy for those working online to access their money.
He went on to say that the Ministry of Information and Digital Economy and the Treasury are working to have the system set up.
"Because many people don't have credit cards. The Ministry of ICT and the Treasury are working out a mechanism so that you can be able to access your payment through Mpesa and make it easier and also we will negotiate to make sure you get a good exchange rate," Ruto said.
He spoke at the Nyeri National Polytechnic where he attended the centenary celebrations of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVETs) in the country.
His remarks were in response to a request by one of the youths in the institution who noted that the biggest challenge they face is the process involved in the processing of payments.
Last week, Ruto and a team from Meta announced that Kenyans will now be able to monetise their content on Facebook and Instagram.
During the announcement, the President said Meta will start paying Kenyan digital creators through M-Pesa.
Ruto said the team from Meta had already experimented with the same and that it is working.
He said once the eligibility program is rolled out in the next few weeks, the creators will start receiving their pay via the mobile money platform.
"I'm very happy that the monetisation is also going to be on M-Pesa. I think many people have been wondering how we do this because not many of our content creators have credit cards or other instruments, but I was very happy to hear that the team from Meta has already carried out experiments and that it works," Ruto said.
"Therefore in the next few weeks and months, it will now be possible for our content creators to transact using M-Pesa which is much more easy, accessible and a space where many Kenyans interact freely and much more comfortably."
