More than 10, 000 Muslims in Machakos county have received relief food.

East African Community Cabinet Secretary Penina Malonza said the beneficiaries are from 78 mosques.

“We are in Machakos to launch a special relief food for our Muslim brothers and sisters. We have already identified 22 counties with the highest population of muslims for the initiative,” she said.

Malonza spoke during the launch of the programme in Machakos county on Monday.

She was accompanied by Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi and county commissioner Josephine Ouko.

“Machakos is one of the counties, it has 78 mosques and 10, 000 Muslims,” Malonza said.

The donations include 160 bags of rice, 400 bags of beans, 10 cartons of cooking oil and another 10 cartons of fish.

The programme is expected to assist needy Muslims during the holy month of Ramadhan.

Malonza thanked Machakos county security and intelligence committee for its cooperation and making the exercise successful.

“I thank the county commissioner for her corporation, this is one of the most organised exercises we have had,” Malonza said.

She said she will use the exercise to help Muslims understand the government's development projects and programmes.

“Muslims are in business, there are subsidies provided for by the state that they can take advantage of to expand their businesses,” Malonza said.

Machakos county has received Sh29.2 billion from the government for water projects alone.

“The government is out and ready to support. The cost of living has started going down; costs of electricity, fuel and dollar have gone down. There is hope,” Malonza said.
