National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has revealed that there are plans to facelift Bungoma to a city status after Eldoret town.

He said that his dream is to ensure that Bungoma becomes a city in his lifetime as a speaker and politician.

“We now have Nakuru, Kisumu and Eldoret queuing. Bungoma must be the one behind Eldoret in this region as the next city,” Wetang’ula stated.

The Ford Kenya leader said for Bungoma to grow to the desired status, he asked the County leadership led by Governor Kenneth Lusaka to plan properly adding that the town has many roads that have no names.

“If you are not sure of the names, just name them according to the Constituency names for example Tongaren road,” he said.

He spoke at the Bungoma County Assembly premises on Monday during the groundbreaking of the debating chambers and the launch of the Konza digital skills laboratory.

Wetang’ula commented on the ongoing rehabilitation of Masinde Muliro stadium saying that those sitting on the public land should vacate to offer space for the stadium expansion.

“I’m one of the people whose shops were demolished along Kanduyi to pave the way for the construction and expansion of the stadium. I have not asked the governor because I can see why my shop was demolished,” Wetang’ula stated.

The National Assembly speaker was responding to a cry by the family of a former governor who lamented over the demolition of their Sh5 million property.

Wetang’ula’s sentiments were echoed by Bungoma governor Kenneth Lusaka who noted that the county is on the right trajectory of ensuring that the plan to facelift the town's status is realized.

Lusaka, however, cited the rehabilitation of the Masinde Muliro stadium, Matulo airstrip, installation of street lights in Bungoma town and upgrading of roads as some of the plans of face-lifting the town.

Also present were Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli, Trade and Industry PS Dr Juma Mukhwana and Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa.
