Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan has assured residents of Nairobi's Kiambiu neighbourhood that the informal settlement is not under any threat.

In a statement on X, Yusuf said dismissed as false information that has been circulating regarding the demolish of the informal settlement in Eastleigh South.

"Last night, alongside Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and local MCA Nicholas Okwacho, we dispelled these rumours. We assured the residents that Kiambiu is here to stay," he said.

The legislator added that Kiambiu, which is estimated to house 50,000 people, is secure.

The legislator said that in 2023, together with the Nairobi Governor, they raised the issue of Kiambiu with President William Ruto.

"At that time, Kiambiu was considered an extension of the Eastleigh Airforce Base, with its ownership claimed by the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF)," he said.

According to the lawmaker, the President acted swiftly and directed the KDF to relinquish ownership of the expansive settlement.

He said the KDF transferred the 74 acres on which Kiambiu sits to the central government.

"We are grateful to the President for his decision to normalise the status of Kiambiu and protect the residents of the area," he said.

The legislator added that the authorities have since surveyed the Kiambiu land.

Once the survey plan is completed, he added, they will be able to implement proper infrastructure such as roads, housing, schools and medical facilities for Kiambiu.

He said that after that, the real development of the neighbourhood will then commence in earnest.
