At least 53 cholera cases reported due to floods - Mwaura

Says public health officials have been deployed for a risk assessment of all 167 IDP camps

At least 53 cases of cholera so far have been reported to the Ministry of Health, Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura has said.

Mwaura said the Kenya Red Cross conducted medical outreach programmes for cholera control and other waterborne diseases in Tana River and Marsabit Counties.

He added that public health officials have been deployed for a risk assessment of all 167 internally displaced camps and the evaluation of nutrition, as well as the safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene (handwash) points.

"The floods have impacted a total of 62 health facilities in 11 counties and damaged 419 Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities in 20 Counties," he said in a statement on Monday.

He said that a total of 41,1825 people have been affected by the flooding across the country.

At least 58,009 households have been displaced in Nairobi County adding to the number of 55,575 displaced households countrywide.

"The government sends sincere condolences to the affected families and continues to emphasise the safety and security of all Kenyans especially, those residing in the high-risk areas," he said.

Mwaura said that the government will continue to provide the required support to the affected communities.

"We urge fellow Kenyans, as well as our local and international partners, to continue to work with us, in providing search and rescue services as well as food and non-food item supplies to the affected households."

Mwaura further said that a multi-agency team including the State Department for Public Works is undertaking demolitions of unsafe structures in Kirinyaga, Kiambu and Nairobi counties.

He reiterated that all persons residing within the 30-metre riparian corridor of rivers and other watercourses across the country have been ordered to vacate for their safety.

Mandatory evacuation along rivers in Nairobi County (Mathare, Ngong and Nairobi Rivers) is also ongoing with the government facilitating logistical support, temporary shelter and essential supplies to those affected.

He said that essential food supplies of rice and beans totalling 1,226,400 Kg have been distributed to support affected communities in Busia, Homabay and Kisumu.

Other counties include Machakos, Makueni, Tana River, Kilifi, Nakuru, Garissa, Turkana, Isiolo, Migori, Kajiado, Nairobi, Nyandarua, Kiambu and Muranga Counties.

There is however, a need for more food, medical kits and non-food items in affected Counties where search and rescue operations are still ongoing including, Narok, West Pokot, Nyeri, Siaya and Kirinyaga Counties, he added.
