President William Ruto has appointed former ambassador to US Lazarus Amayo as the Special Envoy of the African Union Champion for Institutional Reforms.

Amayo will play a critical role in driving AU institutional reforms in liaison with State Department for Foreign Affairs and African Union institutions.

The President made the appointment to support the country’s regional and continental outreach in the administration of the Executive Office of the President.

Amayo has held several senior positions among them Permanent Representative to the United Nations (2018-2020), High Commissioner to the UK (2014-2018), Permanent Representative to the Maritime Organisation and Commonwealth Organisation.

He also served as Director for Europe and Commonwealth Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (2010-2014), High Commissioner to Malawi and Zambia and Permanent Representative to COMESA (2006-2010), High Commissioner to India with concurrent accreditation to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Singapore (1999-2004).
