Murkomen: Lamu-Ijara Road set for completion by February 2025

Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport Kipchumba Murkomen has affirmed the scheduled completion of the 256km Lamu-Ijara road by February 2025.

During a meeting with stakeholders and the leadership of Lamu County on Thursday, Murkomen emphasized that this infrastructure project stands as a crucial long-term solution to enhance the efficiency of goods transportation in Lamu.

According to the CS, Lamu Port is strategically positioned to be the port of call for goods destined for Northern Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Sudan, creating jobs and helping grow the economies of towns along the corridor.

"We will do all in our power to facilitate the shipment of goods, including the 60,000-tonne fertiliser cargo destined for Ethiopia, in spite of a damaged section of the Lamu-Witu-Garsen road due to floods," the CS said.

"The consignment, the largest to ever dock in Kenya, is a vote of confidence in the LAPSSET Corridor development and the Port of Lamu, our second maritime hub."

Murkomen thanked President William Ruto for his leading efforts to draw business to the Lamu Port, saying the move will help create jobs and boost the economy of Lamu County as well as those of Tana River, Isiolo and Marsabit, which are also in the LAPSSET Corridor.

Other leaders who were present during the meeting are meeting were Lamu Governor Issa Timamy, Senator Joseph Kamau, Woman Rep Monica Muthoni, KeNHA DG Kung'u Ndung'u, his LAPSSET counterpart Stephen Ikua, KPA MD Captn William Ruto and security teams.
