History of Limuru meetings and their significance

The history of Limuru meetings, bringing together a section of leaders and residents of the Mt Kenya region, dates back many decades.

The most remembered ones are Limuru I, II and III.

The first meeting, Limuru I, was held to rally the Mt Kenya region to back the 2010 constitution after then-president Mwai Kibaki got wind of information that some leaders were keen on opposing it.

The second meeting, Limuru II, happened ahead of the 2013 elections and it also brought together leaders and residents of Mt Kenya region.

The meeting sought to affirm the region's endorsement of the candidature of Former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his then-deputy William Ruto.

The two were facing trial at the ICC and there were fears about their candidature.

The latest, Limuru III, meeting brought together a section of leaders from the Mt Kenya region, the majority of them being those who did not win elective seats in the 2022 elections.

The meeting was led by Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua and Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni.
