Global soft drinks titan Coca-Cola has pledged to invest nearly three billion shillings upgrading their Nairobi factory.

Work on the modernisation project is scheduled to start next year.

The deal is among the fruits of President William Ruto’s state visit to the US.

“This will mean considerable investment and job prospects for Kenyans,” said Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who is accompanying Ruto in Atlanta.

More partnerships, such as basketball powerhouse NBA partnering with Equity Bank to support the sport’s growth in Kenya are anticipated.

“These are just initial highlights, but the President will meet potential backers from businesses and beyond, eager to establish stakes in our thriving nation,” Mudavadi said.

Ruto had the distinguished honour of being the first African leader to be granted a state visit by US President Joe Biden in fifteen years.

This is a reflection of the close diplomatic ties and shared history between our countries.

Topics of trade, innovation, health, climate and security were raised regarding strengthening cooperation over the next sixty years and beyond will feature prominently.

The head of state aims to harness opportunities born of this visit to stimulate exchange and investments between Kenya and the US. He will also continue appealing for climate justice reforms within global financing.

All signs point to deepening strategic collaboration as Kenya occupies an increasingly pivotal role on the continent and internationally.

"This auspicious outreach bodes well for Kenyans’ futures. Kenya's standing in Africa and the world has been with advanced facilities and new employment, Coca-Cola’s commitment will aid our thriving enterprise," Mudavadi said.

More partnerships under discussion foretell increasing shared prosperity through partnership and progress.

Ruto's state visit to the US on May 23 will make him the first African leader to have such honours in 15 years.

He will be the sixth head of state after South Korea, France, India, Australia and Japan, to be accorded a state visit during Joe Biden's presidency.

Washington and Nairobi are celebrating 60 years of diplomatic ties and the US is counting on Kenya as its main security, diplomatic and economic partner in Africa.

"The leaders will discuss ways to bolster our cooperation in areas including people-to-people ties, trade and investment, technological innovation, climate and clean energy, health and security,” said a statement from White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

Ruto is expected to capitalise on the visit to boost trade and investments between the two counties.

He will also intensify his push for climate change reforms in the global financial system.

Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei said the visit highlights Kenya’s central role as a strategic partner and key voice in Africa.

“It recognises that Kenya is a solid partner of the US,” he said during an interview with Capital FM on Friday.

Sing'oei said technical teams from both countries are finalising negotiations for the Strategic Trade and Investment Partnership that will bolster economic ties.

Ruto is expected to seek an extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act, a trade agreement allowing Africa to have duty-free access to the US market.

However, his key campaign pledge to turn around the country’s struggling economy and improve the lives of hustlers is yet to be achieved.

From the trip, US is seeking to get Nairobi's support with the crisis in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

The first group of 200 police officers is expected to arrive in Haiti on May 23/24 and will coincide with Ruto’s US visit.

The deployment comes seven months after the UN Security Council gave Kenya the go-ahead to lead the multinational mission.

Kenya has committed to send a 1,000-person paramilitary police force to battle the gangs that have taken over the Haitian capital and triggered a devastating humanitarian crisis.

Biden also aims to strengthen the role Kenya is playing in the continent, on his administration’s security goals.

The East Africa Community recently admitted the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Somalia to its membership.

Washington is relying heavily on Kenya to play peacemaker in DRC and counterterrorism partner in Somalia.

Biden and Ruto will also discuss counter-terrorism collaboration.

Kenya hosts a US air base for US forces in East Africa at Manda Bay and cooperates with US troops in security operations, which include countering al Shabaab’s insurgency in Somalia.

Further, Kenya has been hosting talks among warring factions from South Sudan.

With US backing, it has also been engaged in back-channel diplomacy designed to ease tensions following the Ethiopia-Somaliland agreement reached on New Year’s day.

The agreement allowed Addis Ababa to establish a naval base in Somaliland.
