The government has announced that about 26,000 teachers employed on contracts in Junior Secondary Schools in 2023 will be given permanent and pensionable terms come  July 1.

The confirmation is a relief to many of them who had raised concerns about their wages which some claimed were not enough to support their livelihoods.

Those employed as JSS interns were pocketing Sh20,000 monthly while those in the lower primary were getting Sh15,000.

The intern teachers are not entitled to any allowance or teachers' health insurance scheme.

But with their protest now over two weeks, one will ask how much will they earn on permanent and pensionable terms.

A majority of the JSS interns are degree and diploma holders.

Once confirmed on Permanent and Pensionable terms they will start at job group C2. This group is equivalent to a senior teacher at the primary school level.

The salary for Job group C2 oscillates around Sh34,955 to a maximum of Sh43,694.

A new teacher will start at Sh34,955  and the salary will be increased automatically after three years.

Under job group C2, those living in Nairobi get a housing allowance of  Sh16,500.

Those in major municipalities will get Sh12,800, while those in minor municipalities will get Sh9,600. Those in other areas get a housing allowance of Sh7,500.

The teacher is also entitled to a Sh6,000 annual leave allowance paid once.

All teachers under job group C2 are entitled to a commuter allowance of Sh4,000.

Those working in hardship areas are also entitled to a hardship allowance of Sh10,900.

Besides that, the teacher will benefit from the health insurance scheme provided by their employer.
