UDA secretary general Cleophas Malala has explained why his car flies the national flag, despite not serving in government.

Speaking on Thursday, Malala said it is because he sits in the Cabinet as President William Ruto's adviser on the implementation of the Kenya Kwanza manifesto.

He insisted that there is a thin line between the ruling party and the government because, without the party, the government would not exist.

He stated that he also did not appoint himself to be sitting in Cabinet meetings and if anyone has a problem with that, they should take it up with the President.

"The President in his wisdom said he wanted to have his advisor sit in the Cabinet to ensure the issues highlighted in his manifesto. There is no way I can be in government without a party. The party is what formed the government," Malala said.

"Without the party, there is no government and so the President said I'll be attending cabinet meetings to advise on how the political agenda and the implementation of the manifesto is ongoing... I did not appoint myself to be sitting in cabinet."

He has on several occasions been spotted displaying the National flag and UDA flag on his official car.

Only a few individuals are allowed to fly the national flag on the cars, including the President, his deputy, Speakers of the National Assembly and Senate, as well as Cabinet secretaries.

Others are Heads of Foreign missions.

In June 2023, the Cabinet cleared Malala alongside the Chairperson of the Council of Economic Advisors David Ndii, National Security Advisor Monica Juma, and the Advisor on Women's Rights Harriette Chiggai to be attending Cabinet meetings.
