Kenyan leaders react to Mexico's election of female president

Claudia Sheinbaum's election has been hailed as an inspiration to womenfolk globally.

News of Mexico electing first female president has been met with excitement in foreign states including Kenya.

It is a landmark achievement that has been positively received after Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, 61, was elected first Mexican female president after serving as Mexico City's Mayor from 2018 to 2023.  

In Kenya a section of leaders have hailed Sheinbaum as a woman who has broken the gender barrier not only in her country, but across the borders where her victory is being embraced wholeheartedly.

In a statement on X, Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba congratulated Sheinbaum saying her win is a demonstration that the future is bright for all women.

Wamuchomba said her victory signifies that women are rising against masculinity.

"Congratulations President Claudia Sheinbaum first woman president of Mexico! Interestingly two women were leading the just concluded polls," she noted.

"There’s a drastic shift from machismo politics. ‘Apresidenta’ will now lead a femicide-plagued country," Wamuchomba said.

"Future is women."

Former nominated Senator Millicent Omanga on her part said that Sheinbaum's rise to the high office is an inspiration to women.

She added that her victory as Mexico's first female president is a win for women across the globe.

"Mexico elects the first female president, former mayor, and climate scientist Claudia Sheinbaum in a historic election that saw her win by a landslide," Omanga said.

"Claudia's meteoric rise to the top seat is a plausible inspiration and a win for all women across the world. Congrats!" Omanga said on X.

Besides breaking the gender barrier, Sheinbaum is also the first Jewish person to be elected president of Mexico after securing a landslide victory. 

Born on June 24, 1962, to scientist parents, Sheinbaum also grew up to become a scientist, an academician and a politician. 

She earned an undergraduate degree in 1989, a master's degree in 1994 and a PhD in 1995 in Energy engineering.

As an academician, Sheinbaum has authored over 100 articles and two books on energy, the environment and sustainable development.

The president-elect received her PhD in energy engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). 

From 2000 to 2006, Sheinbaum served as Secretary of the Environment under outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador during his tenure as Head of Government.

Sheinbaum also served as Delegation Chief of the Tlalpan borough from 2015 to 2017.

She was elected  Mexico's Head of Government in the 2018 election, where she ran a campaign that emphasised curbing crime and enforcing zoning laws.

Upon her inauguration as Mexico City's head of government on  December 5, 2018, Sheinbaum became the first female head of government and the first to come from a Jewish background.

She openly identifies as a feminist, aligning her beliefs and actions with the principles of gender equality and women's rights in a country largely dominated by male chauvinism. 

Sheinbaum advocates for the legalisation of abortion, aligning her stance with broader movements aimed at promoting reproductive rights and autonomy for women.
