An inmate convicted of defilement and setenced to life escaped from the Nakuru GK prison but was later nabbed by officers.
The suspect was re-arrested a day later by police with the assistance of Molo residents.
Police said the suspect had a dislocated arm and had been taken for an urgent operation at the Nakuru Level 5 hospital when he made a run for it.
According to police, the prison wardens probing the matter suspect that the inmate twisted his arm on purpose to find a way to escape from prison.
"While being processed for the operation Monday morning, he managed to master the cuffs tied to his hospital bed [and] vanished into thin air to the bewilderment of his keepers," the Directorate of Criminal Investigations said in a statement.
Police re-arrested him in the evening at the Keepleft area of Molo in Nakuru county, the DCI said.
This was after Molo residents sighted a man who looked like a police officer with a pair of handcuffs tucked at the waist.
Police were alerted and rushed to arrest the suspect.
They recovered the cuffs, a phone (mulika mwizi) a pair of inmates' uniform and the county hospital records from his backpack.
The suspect has since been surrendered back to the prison pending arraignment for the charge of escaping from lawful custody.
