A high school teacher in Nyamira died by suicide after he allegedly lost a gaming gamble.

Teachers at the school where he taught said they went looking for him after he missed school on Wednesday.

His body was found hanging by a shawl from the roof of his house Thursday morning.

The deceased had reportedly interacted with his colleagues the previous day and they got concerned when they failed to see him by end of day on Wednesday.

“We tried reaching him by phone but it went unanswered all day,” a teacher said.

There was still no response the entire night prompting his colleagues to go to his house to check on him.

“They found the house locked from inside but the phone was still ringing but he was not answering,” a teacher said.

“They opened the window and that’s when they saw his body hanging from the roof.”

A colleague told the media that the deceased had confided in him that he was having financial problems.

He said he had been employed by the school's board of management and had worked for four years.

“He had financial problems, he came to me and borrowed some cash and he said he had many debts but was working on paying them,” he said.

“I may not say for certain he took his life because of losing a bet but I have seen him gamble many times.”

Another teacher said the deceased, 27, had reportedly borrowed about Sh50,000 from a friend and staked it in a game but lost the bet.

“The loss must have stressed him and led him to take his life to avoid repaying the amount,” he said.
