Mystery surrounds the motive of an incident where an unidentified man allegedly gained entry into a catholic church and allegedly defecated on a statue of Jesus.

Police in Siaya are investigating the incident and are looking for the suspect.

County commander Cleti Kimaiyo said the incident happened at St. Andrew’s Bondo Catholic Church.

He said the act was reported at Bondo police station by the parish priest, Rev Father Edwin Obudho.

Kimaiyo said the statue, which has been at the church altar, was reported missing.

“After reviewing the CCTV footage, it was established that a stranger who was dressed in a black and white striped shirt and black trousers entered the church hall when a few congregants were deep in prayer,” Kimaiyo said.

The suspect is then said to have proceeded to the upper gallery where he had hidden the statue. He then descended to the altar where he picked the statue.

“He then defecated on the statue before exiting the church. He hid the defaced statue underneath the pews.”

Efforts to trace the suspect are ongoing.

Police said the motive of the incident is still unknown as nothing else was destroyed or stolen at the said premise.

Kimaiyo said the motive is yet to be established.
