In courts today

The trial hearing of the murder case against former Eastleigh-based cop Ahmed Rashid resumes today with the third of the 25 state witnesses taking to the stand.

Rashid was in April last year charged with the murder of two teenagers- Jamal Mohammed and Mohammed Dhair Kheri- on March 31, 2017, at Amal Plaza in Eastleigh, Nairobi.

He denied the two counts of murder before Justice Diana Kavedza and was released on a Sh200,000 bond.

State prosecutor Allan Mulama had said they would avail 25 witnesses to testify during trial.

Twelve of those witnesses are police officers while the other 13 are civilians out of whom six will be placed under the care of the Witness Protection Agency, Mulama said.

Already, one protected witness and a civilian have testified. The hearing started on March 14 and ran into March 15 before it was adjourned to June 12.

During his testimony, Ramadan Karani, the grandfather of one of the slain men told the court he heard about his grandson's death while in Tana River county.

He narrated to the court how he got wind of the news and of his ordeal in the days to follow.

He told Kibera High Court Judge Diana Kavedza that he was watching the news and saw the shooting incident.

He said he saw the young man who was reported to have been shot dead and realised it was his grandchild Jamal Mohamed, who worked as a casual labourer in the Eastleigh neighborhood of the city.

Karani said the victim had about seven bullet wounds on his head.

The grandfather asked the court to consider the pain and agony the family has suffered following the murder of their kin when delivering judgment.

Rashid is represented by city advocate Danstan Omari.
