Police in Homa Bay on Saturday shot dead two suspected gangmen they have been pursuing following robbery incidents they engage in.
The men were killed at Kot Kokech area within Homa Bay town constituency along Homa Bay-Kendu Bay road after being intercepted.
They were allegedly escaping when their car lost control and landed in a ditch.
Eyewitnesses said the occupants of the car believed to be gangmen were firing at police officers and detectives who were pursuing them.
The officers overpowered the suspects before they shot them dead.
One of the men was shot about 500 meters from where the car had lost control and landed in a ditch as he was escaping on foot.
The other was killed more than a kilometer away.
A resident, Joseph Awino, said they heard several gun shots as the police were battling the suspects.
One of the suspects tried to hide on the banks of River Osiri.
"The suspect covered his head with clothes and squatted in the river to avoid being seen. One of the police men saw him and shot him," Awino said.
A DCI officer based in Homa Bay town told journalists that investigators found documents in the car including cheque books and other bank documents.
Money was also found in the car alongside a flat screen TV set.
One of the gunmen had a gun, an AK 47, which was also found in the car.
Homa Bay Subcounty DCI office commander Charlse Koilege said the identity of the men is yet to be known.
"Their fingerprints will be taken on Tuesday to help in identification. We are still proceeding with investigations," Koilege said.
Bodies of the deceased were take to Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
