Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and ODM leader Raila Odinga on Wednesday shared a podium during the swearing-in of South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The DP was representing President William Ruto at the event where he also delivered the Head of State's congratulatory message.

South African lawmakers re-elected Ramaphosa to stay on as president last week following a deal to form a coalition government between the ANC, its long-time rival Democratic Alliance (DA) and other parties.

Ramaphosa will now be serving his second term as president.

The DP boarded the Kenya Airways plane on his way to South Africa accompanied by Kiambu Senator Karungo Thangwa and his Kajiado counterpart Seki Lenku.

Their meeting at Ramaphosa's inauguration came a week after the DP cited Raila's current relationship with President Ruto as the reason why he closed ranks with Former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Gachagua in a bid to clarify why he has been a target of a political onslaught in Kenya's Kwanza government said he was being attacked for choosing to work with Uhuru.

He said Uhuru's only fault was to endorse Raila ahead of the 2022 election but given that Ruto has reconciled with the ODM leader, he has no reason to begrudge the former President.

His readiness to team up with Uhuru and unite Mt Kenya has faced massive criticism from a section of President William Ruto's allies who claim he is pulling a tribal card in his quest for political power.

Gachagua has however denied the tribal narrative saying the unity of the Mt Kenya region is not after sidelining a particular region.

He said the bid is after ensuring the Mt Kenya region has strong bargaining power in the national political discourse.

Raila has interestingly backed Gachagua call for one-man, one-vote, One-shilling.
