For a second day running, hundreds of Mombasa residents took to the streets to demonstrate against the high cost of living and the Finance Bill 2024.

The residents converged at the Mapembeni area along Moi Avenue from 12 pm.

On Wednesday, the residents engaged the police in running battles along the streets of Mombasa, but on Thursday, the demonstrations were rather peaceful.

A handful of anti-riot police officers followed the protestors from a distance as they demonstrated along the streets while chanting anti-government songs.

After walking for kilometres, the protestors, mostly youth, headed to the Mombasa County Assembly, the Governor's Offices and later to the Coast Provincial Headquarters, where they camped outside the games for more than 30 minutes.

They chanted, ‘Ruto must go!’ on the faces of the sentries who guarding the main gate of Uhuru na Kazi Building at the Coast Provincial Headquarters.

The premises are adjacent to State House, Mombasa.

The protestors were joined by rights activists from Muslim for Human Rights (Muhuri).

Muslims for Human Rights (Muhuri) Rapid Response Officer, Francis Auma, said they have joined other Kenyans countrywide to protest against Finance Bill.

“The MPs are corrupt, and they have been bought to pass the controversial Finance Bill 2024. We are demanding that they shouldn’t amend it, but it should be rejected in totality,” said  Auma.
