Comedian Eric Omondi released from police custody

Omondi was arrested Friday morning while protesting outside Parliament buildings.

Comedian Eric Omondi was released from police custody Friday evening.

Omondi had been arrested earlier in the day while protesting outside Parliament buildings.

Kenyans on social media condemned the arrest and called on security agencies to release him.

In a statement on her Instagram stories, Omondi's wife Lynne Njihia confirmed his release.

"He's free," she said in the brief statement without adding more details.

In a statement on X, Omondi said he was on his way to attend a comedy show at the Carnivore Restaurant organised as a tribute to his late brother, Fred, who was also a comedian.

"Tukutane Carnivore sasa!! I'm on my way to 'One more Last laugh' for Fred Omondi," he said.

In a video seen by the Star, Omondi was in the company of a few other individuals donned in red clothes, while protesting.

The comedian and activist was on a horse marching with the others when police officers followed them.

"Power to the people," they were heard chanting.

The officers then seen pulled Omondi from the back of the horse and detained him.  

On Thursday, Omondi had in a post on X, form,erly Twitter, called out legislators who had voted in favour of the contentious Finance Bill, 2024.

The Bill was endorsed by 204 MPs to sail through the Second Reading stage. Only 115 MPs opposed.

Omondi said the MPs who gave the piece of legislation a clean bill of health had gone against the wishes of Kenyans.

"When the representatives of the people are unable to represent the people, the people shall represent themselves!

"It will not be a walk in the park. If we lose they, must lose," he said.

Comedians and friends gathered Friday night at the carnivore Restaurant to honour Fred Omondi who died in a road accident on Kangundo Road on Saturday morning, June 15.

Police said the accident happened after a boda boda carrying him was involved in a head-on collision with a speeding bus around 6am.

"The accident happened near Caltex Petrol station on Kangundo Road,"  a police report filed at Buruburu station stated.
