Heath CS Susan Nakhumicha has nominated Dr Patrick Amoth as the Director General for health.

Nakhumicha has forwarded Amoth's name to Parliament for approval.

Amoth has occupied the position in an acting capacity for more than four years after succeeding Dr John Masasabi, the former substantive director general.

Amoth who has been acting as DG since 2019, has been serving as a chief technical advisor to the government in liaison with the Ministry of Health.

The Public Service Commission in February re-advertised for the position of the DG.

This was not the first time the position had been advertised by PSC.

In June 2022, the commission officially advertised for the position and asked those who were interested to apply.

Nakhumicha when reorganising the ministry in April last year announced that Amoth would continue holding the office in an acting capacity effective April 19, 2023.

Speaking in March, Nakhumicha said Amoth has the avenue to rightfully and officially secure the position since it had been advertised.

"So we have to advertise for the job. The advert does not exclude Amoth from applying. I have confidence, given the experience he has, he (Amoth) should emerge as the best," Nakhumicha said on KTN News.

Amoth holds a Bachelor in Medicine and Bachelor in Surgery Degree from the University of Nairobi as well as a Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology from the same institution.

He is also a holder of a Diploma in Health Systems Management from Galilee College in Israel.

He previously headed the Directorate of Public Health where he spearheaded strategy development for effective delivery of health services in all the 47 Counties in Kenya.

He also headed the Department of Health Sector Coordination and inter-governmental affairs.

He has extensive experience in civil service having risen from a Medical Officer Intern to Medical Superintendent in Kiambu District Hospital and later served as the District Medical Officer of Health for the now Kiambu County.

He also had a successful stint as the Chief Medical Specialist and Senior Deputy Director of Medical Services at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Nairobi.
