Kenyans raise over 2 million for Rex, Evans' burial expenses

The two succumbed to injuries sustained during the Finance Bill protests.

Kenyans have so far fundraised over Sh2 million aimed at covering the burial expenses of Rex Kanyike and Evans Kiratu

The two succumbed to injuries sustained during the Finance Bill protests.

Kenyans came together to support the families of the two.

A fundraiser was started on M-changa Africa, with the goal being Sh2 million but Kenyans surpassed it by raising an extra Sh643,333 more as of the goal set.

On the M-Changa Website, a statement read; 'Rex and Evans supported us with everything they had... now it's our turn to support their families.'

This contribution was made possible by 7,518 supporters. 

"May the souls of the fallen soldiers rest in peace. We won't relent or give up on this fight for a better Kenya," Milly, a supporter of the fundraiser said in the M-Changa comment section.

Evans Kiratu, who was allegedly struck by a tear gas canister in his groin during the protests, passed away on Friday, June 21.

Kiratu was taken to Kenyatta National Hospital by a group of well-wishers, where he was treated for severe injuries and internal bleeding. Police said they had been informed of the death.

Inspector-General of Police Japhet Koome condemned the protesters' actions, emphasising the importance of maintaining order.

IPOA launched a monitoring operation into police conduct during the mass protests against the proposed Finance Bill, 2024 on June 18.
