Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will today at 5:30 address the nation from Mombasa.

A press invite from the DP's office, which was labelled as urgent, indicated that Gachagua will address the nation from the Deputy President's residence in Kizingo, Mombasa.

This comes even as President William Ruto is expected to address the country from Nairobi at 4 PM

The two leaders' addresses come in the wake of massive concerns raised over a police crackdown on a group of youths in Githurai, Nairobi.

Earlier in the Day, Gachagua, during a school principals conference, honoured the people and police killed in protest.

Gachagua in his speech steered off politics and the controversial Finance Bill 2024 that led to nationwide chaos and deaths.

However, he asked the over 8,000 secondary school principals attending the 47th Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (Kessha) annual delegates conference at Sheikh Zayed Hall, Mombasa, to stand for a minute to honour those who died in the protests.

“Maybe before I give you my address, I request all of you to be upstanding in a minute silence in honour of our children and security officers, who lost their lives in yesterday’s protest and pandemonium across the country,” Gachagua told the principals.

At least 25 people have been reported dead following the clash between the police and protestors in all major towns of Kenya.

Nairobi had the biggest number of fatalities where at least 20 cases have been reported, after the majority were shot dead after they overpowered the police and entered the Parliament Buildings.

In Mombasa, three people have also been reported dead.

Gachagua arrived in Mombasa just a day after the nationwide anti-finance bill protest.
