The Independent Policing Oversight Authority said it had launched investigations into various incidents that have occurred in parts of the country, during the Finance Bill mass protests.

Ipoa said it takes this step to update the public, on its investigations into various incidents observed during the demonstrations in line with its mandate of guarding public interest in policing.

On the death of Rex Masai, Ipoa said it launched investigations into the death of Masai which was allegedly caused by a police shooting on June 20.

Towards this, IPOA said it has made significant investigative strides.

"Attended the post-mortem and obtained the report on the cause of death, recorded witness statements, visited and documented the crime scene including the collection of evidence, analysed CCTV and other video footage of the incident, obtained necessary police documents, has summoned various officers to record statements, submitted various samples for forensic and ballistics analysis pending task, obtaining expert reports, recording more witness accounts and investigation report compilation," Ipoa said.

The authority also provided investigation details into the death of Evans Kiratu.

Further, Ipoa said their monitors observed and documented a few incidents during the demonstrations.

According to Ipoa, this included the fatal shooting of protesters in Nairobi and other parts of the country, shootings occasioning serious injuries to protesters in Nairobi and other parts, injuries suffered by the public and police officers and instances of excessive use of force against civilians among other incidents.

"The authority will continue monitoring the conduct of the police during these demonstrations and share periodic updates," Ipoa said.

"Further, IPOA condoles with all the families and friends of the departed souls and wishes a quick recovery to the injured."

Ipoa said it remains independent, impartial, fair and apolitical in all its investigations.
