Members of the National Assembly have taken an early break after a day of mayhem and chaos that rocked Parliament buildings Tuesday.

The premises are out of bounds save for workers and MPs, amid heightened security, enforced by Kenya Defence Forces personnel.

MPs are scheduled to ratify the recess in a sitting scheduled this morning from 9.30 am.

Only two motions are scheduled, including the conclusion of the second reading of a bill seeking to guide internship in public service.

“This House further resolves to alter its calendar as adopted on 14th February 2024 and amended on June 25, 2024… to commence its short recess from today, Wednesday, 26th June 2024 upon adjournment of the Morning Sitting,” the order paper for the day reads.

The House is scheduled to resume its regular sitting for the second part of the session on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.

MPs had scheduled to take a break from Friday, June 28 but the plan has since changed following the events after the lawmakers passed the contentious tax bill.

Several sections of parliament were left dysfunctional after the attack, especially the dining, and areas from which the protesters accessed the building.

The protesters vandalised many valuable installations, including critical equipment used to facilitate sittings at the August House.
