Owalo appoints Ummu Ahmed, Musangi Mutua as members of CA board

Information Communication Technology (ICT) Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo has appointed two new members to the board of the Communications Authority of Kenya.

In a gazette notice dated June 27, Owalo appointed Ummu Bunu Haji Ahmed and Musangi Mutua to be members of the board.

Owalo further revoked the appointment of Sarah Kabira, Albert Kochei and Tonia Mutiso.

The CS said the two appointed leaders will serve in their roles for three years effective June 28, 2024.

In the gazette notice, Owalo said the appointments are in line with the Kenya Information and Communications Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act.

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) is the regulatory authority for the communications sector in Kenya.

It was established in 1999 by the Kenya Information and Communications Act, 1998, the Authority is responsible for facilitating the development of the information and communications sectors including; broadcasting, cybersecurity, multimedia, telecommunications, electronic commerce, postal and courier services.

The Authority is responsible for licensing all systems and services in the communications industry, including; telecommunications, postal, courier and broadcasting, managing the country’s frequency spectrum and numbering resources, facilitating the development and management of a national cyber security framework and facilitating the development of e-commerce.

Others are to type approving and accepting communications equipment meant for use in the country, protecting consumer rights within the communications environment and managing competition within the sector to ensure a level playing ground for all players.
