Two people were killed after a motorcycle they were using was involved in a road accident in the Kogwe area in Homa Bay Town.
The boda boda and his passenger died on the spot after their motorcycle was involved in a head-on collision with an oncoming trailer along Homa Bay-Rongo road.
A resident Justo Oyugi said the rider lost control after a tyre burst on the motorbike before colliding with the trailer on the same road.
The deceased were men.
The deceased were heading towards Rongo town while the trailer was moving in the opposite direction.
The trailer was ferrying delivering cement to Homa Bay.
Oyugi urged the relevant authority to erect speed bumps on the road as the area is prone to causing accidents.
“The impact left the rider and passenger dead on the spot. The place is becoming a black spot and hence requires a speed bump,” Oyugi said.
Kobuola Kogwang's assistant chief Philemon Ongola said their preliminary investigations established that the motorcycle had a tyre bust which he said caused the accident.
He said the front tyre suddenly lost pressure and the rider had difficulties seeing the motorcycle.
“The rider suddenly moved in the opposite lane that is meant for oncoming vehicles before the impact,” Ongola said.
According to the administrator, the rider could not control his motorcycle after the sudden loss of tyre pressure.
As soon as he moved to the right, the trailer hit the rider and his passenger.
Ongola said residents from the area rushed to the scene in a bid to save the men.
Homa Bay subcounty police commander Peter Maluki said the rider broke his limbs in the accident. They also bled profusely.
“Officers arrived at the scene and collected bodies to Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary. We’re urging road users to observe traffic rules to avoid accidents,” Maluki said.
The police officer said they have launched investigations into what caused the accident.
“If possible, ensure vehicles or motorcycles are well serviced to minimize accidents,” he said.
