The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has fired a warning to alleged gang members taking advantage of the protests to steal from Kenyans.

Kenyans on Tuesday came out to protest against the high taxes imposed on the Finance Bill 2024.

This is despite President William Ruto declining to assent to the Bill and returning it to Parliament.

In a statement, police said they have dispatched teams to pursue the alleged gang members.

Police said the suspects violently cornered innocent Kenyans and robbed them.

"DCI teams have been dispatched to pursue gang members recorded by concerned citizens violently robbing innocent Kenyans on the roads while taking advantage of the ongoing demonstrations," DCI stated.

Police warned those involved in the offence that they would be found as their faces were caught on camera and recorded by Kenyans.

"Anyone involved in criminal activities is reminded that it is just a matter of time before the long arm of the law catches up with them, and that their felonious acts shall be met with the full force of the law," police stated.

In the clips shared by the DCI, a group of people were seen approaching parked vehicles on the street, breaking the windows and looting from them.

Others were seen throwing stones on the opposite buildings breaking the glasses.

The group dispersed immediately a police vehicle approached the incident.

In another clip, a group of people cornered a man and robbed him of all the belongings he had.

The man was seen watching helplessly as everything was being taken away.

In a video seen by the Star, a group of people approached a building that had a butchery.

They were seen looting from the building as others stood close by to watch.

On Monday, Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga said individuals who were involved in acts of lawlessness during the anti-tax protests will face the full force of the law.

He said the mass protests witnessed across the country recently led to loss of lives, and damage to property and left many nursing serious injuries.

Ingonga directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to expeditiously conclude investigations into all acts of a criminal nature and forward the file to his office for the necessary action.

"Any individual found culpable will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," he said.

"Further, any future acts of violence leading to loss of lives, and/or destruction of private and public property, moreso critical infrastructure including Parliament, Judiciary, National and County Government facilities shall be met with the fullest force of the law."

DCI said they had launched investigations to apprehend and prosecute individuals who took advantage of the protests last week and went on a looting spree, destroying property and businesses.

DCI unveiled the faces of some of the suspects caught on CCTV and called on Kenyans to report them to the nearest police station.
