Police in Mombasa on Tuesday intervened to rescue a suspected thief from lynching.

This was after he was allegedly caught by anti-government protesters in Mombasa trying to steal.

In a video, the man dressed in a black shirt is seen being beaten by the protesters before he escapes.

He is however caught again and beaten before the police intervene and rescue him.

The suspect is then rescued by police officers who took him in a land cruiser and drove off.

Demonstrations began earlier in Mombasa with peaceful protesters chanting anti-government slogans and carrying placards.

At some point, the peaceful demonstration groups in Mombasa divided themselves into two as goons took advantage and started harassing protesters.

A man, seen dressed in white, managed to save his phone but escaped with torn clothes along Digo Road roundabout.
