Police in Kitengela on Wednesday said all was well in the town until after 10.30 am when the hell broke loose after thousands of goons started invading business premises.

Kitengela OCS David Shani said police are restrained from using live bullets in controlling unruly crowds.

“The number of goons pretending to be demonstrators against the infamous Finance Bill was overwhelming. They moved around in thousands,” said Shani.

More than 2000 people suspected to be goons stormed a famous joint in Kitengela town and stole all the beers, TV screens, and raw and roast meat before burning the tyres outside the building on the Kitengela - Namanga road.

As of Wednesday morning, the owners of the popular spot were still counting the losses.

They refused to comment on the matter.

“We do not wish to talk about it,” said one of the senior officials of the lounge.

Police from Kajiado county headquarters and Isinya arrived early in Kitengela to contain the situation, but the number of those claiming to be demonstrators outnumbered the officers.

In viral video clips on social media, hundreds of people walk out of Kitengela Quivers Lounge with all goods and seem unafraid.

There were no policemen on site when the incident happened.

Other installations like Eastmatt Supermarket in the town had enough police officers.

There were also enough police officers at Naivas Supermarket and the Quick Mart Supermarket in Yukos.

Despite all the business premises being closed down by their owners, several shops were broken into and property stolen.

The police said they could not be everywhere as the number of the goons increased with time.

Most of the business people on realising that the police were not nearby, were forced to hire young men to protect their property.

As early as 9 am, most people owning shops outside the CBD were selling goods through the windows.

From 11 am on Tuesday, gunshots and tear gas canisters were fired by the police on people who had grouped in several places.
