Eyes on Uhuru Park as all set for protest victims memorial

The concert will honour tens killed during anti-government protests.

Thousands of Gen Zs and Millennials are expected to throng Uhuru Park Sunday for a memorial concert in honour of protesters killed during anti-finance Bill and anti-government demos countrywide.

July 7 is also an important day in the fight for the country's second liberation and the event will be used to reflect on Kenya's history.

The event, dubbed Shujaaz Memorial Concert, will also bring onboard other people outside the bracket of the two generations who have committed to supporting the course.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja who okayed the use of Uhuru Park for the memorial said he would attend the concert.

Organisers of the concert led by Activitst Boniface Mwangi said the concert is expected to start at noon and end 7pm.

Officials said A prayer event is planned at the nearby All Saints Cathedral before the event proceeds.

Gates to the venue will be open from 9 am.

Several artists are expected to perform.

Mwangi in a poster shared on his x platform indicated that rappers Khaligraph Jones, Octopizzo, Juliani, singers Bien, Fena, Nameless, Eric Wanaina, Charisma, Sarabi band, Graffiti Band and Field Marshall's band among others are set to perform.

Some participants are expected to gather first at the Nairobi Central Business District before they march to Uhuru Park.

Police on Saturday met to plan how they would provide security for the event.

Top police officers met on Friday at police headquarters in Nairobi and resolved to provide security for the event.

They ordered police officers in the Nairobi Region to reach out to the organisers of the memorial event and agree on how it will be conducted and managed.

Police said they expect thousands to turn up for the event.

Among others, the team will agree on the routes to be used to and from the park.

The police meeting felt trying to disrupt the event would turn chaotic given past such events or marches in the city.
