The Kenya Revenue Authority is in mourning following the death of its former Commissioner General Michael Waweru.
KRA Board of Directors Chair Anthony Mwaura said the authority offers its deepest condolences to the family of Waweru following his passing.
"We, the Board, Management, and Staff of the Kenya Revenue Authority extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the former KRA Commissioner General Michael Waweru, following his transition," the board said.
Waweru served at the authority from 2003 to 2012 when his tenure came to an end.
" Waweru’s nine years of service were marked by significant contributions to sustainable economic progress through enhanced revenue collection - a legacy that will forever be remembered. May he rest in eternal peace," the KRA board chair said.
The authority said it takes great pride in acknowledging the significant contributions he made during his tenure.
KRA said Waweru established a strong foundation for the country's tax compliance culture and transformed KRA through staff empowerment.
"Waweru will be remembered for his fundamental role in boosting the country's sustainable economic progress through enhancement of revenue collection efforts," the board said.
Before his death, Waweru served as the Chairman of the board of East African Cables.
TransCentury Plc chairperson Shaka Kariuki said in a statement that Waweru died on Friday, July 5, 2024.
Waweru was commended for his selfless service and commitment to his work.
He was eulogised as a visionary leader with unwavering dedication and insightful guidance.
Kariuki added that his pioneering spirit laid the foundation for the Group’s success.
"Throughout his tenure, Dr. M. G. Waweru’s contributions were immeasurable, and his legacy will forever be etched in the history of our company and our hearts," Kariuki said.
Waweru served as the EA Cables Board Chairman for seven years since his appointment in June 2017.
