President William Ruto on July 11 fired his entire Cabinet and Attorney General save Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi and retreated to form what he termed as a “broad-based government” whose face he said he would unveil in due course.

Ruto has since said the new-look Cabinet will have the face of the country and affirmed that plans to establish a government of national unity that would bring Kenyans together is irreversible.

The Gen Z, a group of youthful Kenyans behind nationwide protests triggered by the planned introduction of unpopular taxes, have said they will ‘vet’ each of the new nominees to ensure no individual with questionable character makes it on the list.

In pushing Ruto to rid his government of individuals they deemed unfit to hold office, they have said this time round, they’ll reject any nominee with a tainted track record prior to and not after the appointment.

However, Senior Counsel Dr John Khaminwa holds a contrary opinion.

The seasoned lawyer believes that not all apples in Ruto’s former Cabinet were rotten.

He has advised the President to reappoint those he feels were “good.”

“Let the President swing into action and listen to advice. Human nature is complex and intricate - experience is the best teacher and far better than formal education,” he said, drawing his wise counsel from years of what he said was the country’s history.

“My advice to him is that let him return some of the ministers whom he thinks are good i.e. trustworthy, hardworking and not corrupt and of course attempt to convince the majority of Kenyans that he is there to serve their vital economic interests and no more,” Khaminwa said.

He outlined his sentiments in a statement which he tasked lawyer Nelson Havi to post on his X account.

Khaminwa previously confessed that he is not active on any social media platform.

“Dr John Khaminwa summoned me and asked that I bring his statement to the attention of the public and the President,” Havi said in a caption accompanying the statement.

In his message to those calling for elected leaders to vacate office, Khaminwa advised that they be allowed to complete their terms but 2027 voted them out.

He reminded the agitators that the very people “who occupy seats of political power were voted into power by ourselves”.

“Let us give them a chance to serve us and kick them out of power come the next election. Incidentally, let us not forget that some of them are honest and hard-working. Not all are corrupt. Not all are dishonest,” he said.

The lawyer urged Gen Z to call off their mass protests saying the President has heard them and he now needed time to work on making the necessary changes.

“Our youths have spoken. They have been heard by the establishment. Let them not go further, to do so would bring disaster as there would be no Kenya to talk about and complain against. Let the President take note of what they have said,” he said.
