The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has said that at least 2,407 Kenyans have lost their lives in road crashes from January to July 7, 2024.

This represents a 2.82 per cent increase in deaths recorded from road crashes in the same period last year.

This is out of over 11,502 road crashes recorded in the same period.

In the same period last year, a total of 9,874 fatalities were recorded.

At least 6,083 people sustained serious injuries, while 4,083 had slight injuries.

From the deaths, 919 were pedestrians, 210 drivers, 478 passengers, 199 pillion passengers, 46 pedal cyclists, and 555 motorcyclists.

In January 389 deaths were recorded, 374 in February, 403 in March, 388 in April, 341 in May and 411 in June.

Between July 1, to July 7, 2024, a total of 101 road fatalities were reported across the country.

In the fatalities recorded in the first week of July, most occurred between 3 pm and 11 pm.

"The peak hour is between 9 pm.

Saturday, Monday and Sunday have the highest fatalities at 21, 18 and 15 respectively.

"This is largely attributed to reduced enforcement during these times, high volumes of traffic and pedestrians (rush hour) and pedestrians crossing at non-designated or unsafe areas and getting easily knocked down or ran over by speeding vehicles," NTSA said.

The authority added that driver fatigue, poor visibility especially for pedestrians and drunk driving also contributed to the deaths.
