Tifa: Kenyans in Nyanza, Nairobi concerned about police action during demos

Kenyans across the country, particularly in Nairobi and Nyanza expressed their strong concerns about police action during protests.

In a poll by Tifa, 75 per cent of Kenyans said police used excessive force during protests while 17 per cent said police used an appropriate level of force.

Eight per cent were not sure if the police used excessive force or not.

"The perception of excessive force used by the police during protests is widespread, with significant concerns highlighted in the Nairobi and Nyanza regions," Tifa said.

"This sentiment reflects deep-rooted issues regarding law enforcement practices and raises critical questions about the balance between maintaining order and respecting the rights of protesters."

The poll was conducted on 16 and 17 July 2024 with a sample size of 1,507.

The sample was distributed across the counties proportionate to population size.

There was a margin error of +/- 2.52% during the research which was done through telephonic interviews at the household level.
