Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Sunday visited ailing veteran popular Gikuyu musician Paul Mutonga alias Wanganangu at his home in Muchatha village, Kiambaa, Kiambu county.
The two have been friends since 1993 when Gachagua was serving as a District Officer for Kiambaa.
During the visit, the ailing 95-year-old music maestro known for his hit songs like 'Ndiari Rui Maithinga' and 'Mwendwa Lucy' performed several hits for the Deputy President and the other guests with an accordion and the famous One Man box guitar.
The guests were also entertained by Wanganangu's son, Wanganangu Junior -an upcoming artist- through the One Man guitar prowess.
"I am grateful for the visit by the Deputy President and the other guests accompanying him. His gesture towards an old musician like me is inspiring. It is a thrilling moment," said Mr Wanganangu flanked by his family members.
While wishing Wanganangu good health, Gachagua narrated about his encounter with the old artist during his tour of duty in Kiambaa.
"I met Wanganangu while serving as a District Officer in Kiambaa between 1993 -1996. He would attend public functions to entertain the guests with his very meaningful songs enriched with traditions and culture. We have been friends since," said the Deputy President.
Praising Wanganangu over his culturally rich songs, which have been able to withstand the test of time and remain popular among generations, Gachagua said the musician is a hero.
"We thank God for our heroes and it is important to always remember and value them. They are the custodians of the values, inscribed in culture and traditions. May God continue to give him a long life," he stated.
He added:
"We are proud of his art. Wanganangu is a great musician and his contribution to the entertainment industry is huge. We must protect and take care of our artists. I wish him a good quick recovery. We look forward to his son taking the music to the next level," said Gachagua.
Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang'wa and MPs Jayne Kihara (Naivasha), Samuel Parashina (Kajiado South), Benjamin Gathiru Mejjadonk (Embakasi Central) and MCAs led by Muchatha Ward Representative Karanja Kamau (KK) were present.
On his way from the area, the Deputy President acknowledged greetings from the people at Muchatha centre and Ruaka township.
He reiterated the Government's commitment to eradicate illegal alcohol drinks and drug abuse.
"The drug peddlers will not be allowed to operate or thrive," he said.
Senator Thang'wa praised the Deputy President for his resolve to lead the fight against drug abuse and illicit brews.
"As senators we will continue pushing for good governance. I am grateful for the Deputy President's leadership in eradicating illicit brews and drugs. The people are supreme and their interests must be put forward. All leaders must listen to the people who elected them and advocate for their interests," said the senator.
