National Assembly staff assured of safety as they resume duty

The staff will be resuming duty for the first time after protesters stormed Parliament.

Clerk of the National Assembly Samuel Njoroge has assured Parliamentary staff of safety even as they resume duty this week.

Njoroge said they have put plans in place to expedite a return to normalcy in the institution following a chaotic incident that saw Parliament Buildings raided and a section of it set ablaze.

"Your security and safety at the workplace remain a key priority in these plans," Njoroge stated in a message to colleague dated July 19.

"As public servants, let us lean on our usual resilience, impartiality, professionalism, and solidarity to enable us to rebuild and continue serving the Nation and our institution with excellence."

He thanked each one of the staff for their unwavering commitment and dedication to public service as they resumed their usual duties on Monday.

Njoroge also thanked National Assembly staff for their selfless conduct and swift response during the Tuesday, June 25, 2024, Occupy Parliament protest. 

"I wish to sincerely thank all of you for your selfless conduct and swift response to safeguard the safety and well-being of Members of Parliament, visitors and yourselves during the unprecedented and unfortunate events that occurred in the Institution of Parliament on Tuesday, June 25, 2024," Njoroge said.

"Your bravery in the face of challenge and adversity is truly commendable." 

Njoroge single out officers from the Directorate of Sergeant-at-Arms, the Directorate of Security and Safety Services and the Department of Hospitality Services, together with the other security officers deployed to Parliament, the staff from these Directorates/Departments that ably facilitated the evacuation of Members, visitors and staff from the Main Parliament Building to safety. 

He said they were indeed grateful to God for protecting all of them in that difficult moment, as no fatality occurred, and no Member of Parliament, visitor or staff was severely injured.

He stated that the Board of Management is keenly aware that the traumatic events of June 25, 2024, have left an indelible mark on all of them.

"As we move forward from that unfortunate episode, I urge us to retain and enhance our spirit of fellowship and caring for each other," he said.

"Let us build a better and stronger foundation for the future of the institution of Parliament as we continue serving our beloved Nation and fulfilling the call to continually facilitate Members of Parliament to discharge their constitutional mandate."
