The Ministry of Health will on Thursday take part in a tree-planting event in three schools in West Pokot.

The event is organised by the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, the Directorate of Health Sector Coordination and Intergovernmental Relations, the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, the Kenya Primate Research Institute, KHHRAC, the County Commissioner, and the County Government of West Pokot.

"We are planting 16,000 seedlings at Kamonges Primary, Kaptabuk Primary, and Kaptabuk Secondary. Let's work together to foster a greener future," MoH said.

This is in line with President William Ruto's 15 billion trees initiative which seeks to restore 10.6 million hectares of degraded landscape.

This is for improved biodiversity and climate change mitigation and adaptation.

This will also combat Climate-induced deforestation and rangeland degradation remain major drivers of biodiversity-related complexities that call for concerted efforts.

The government seeks to achieve the initiative by 2032, achieving a 30 per cent tree cover in Kenya, reducing greenhouse emissions and stopping deforestation.

On June 1, the National Transport and Safety Authority director general George Njao led the team in the planting of over 10,000 seedlings at Mwapala Primary School in Kwale County.

This happened a week after another team from the authority camped in Machakos County for the same course where it partnered with Kenya Forest Services (KFS).

Other counties where the Authority has planted hundreds of trees include Kirinyaga, Elgeyo Marakwet, Uasin Gishu, Kakamega, Homa Bay Kajiado and Nairobi.

"We will do more of this, as we come up with strategies to save lives, we will also ensure that drivers are coming from a healthy and safe environment by supporting the planting of trees," Njao said.
