Nairobi streets flooded after heavy downpour

Residents in Nairobi were on Friday caught off-guard after heavy downpour pounded the city.

Walking paths in the Nairobi streets were completely submerged in flood waters.

Pedestrians struggled navigating city streets from one side to the other across heavily flooded roads.

The prepared carried umbrellas but had to join the rest in wading through water with some opting to remove shoes and walk barefoot.

The water level was almost above the ankle.

The Kenya Meteorological Department said the dull moist weather is set to continue.

In its forecast for July 23 to July 29, the weatherman said there will be intermittent cold and cloudy conditions over Central Highlands, Western Kenya, South-eastern lowlands and Rift Valley.

Met said there is a probability of rainfall in Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Central Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin and North-western Kenya.

The Department added that in parts of the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley will have morning rains over a few places with afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms.

The areas also include Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Busia, Migori, Narok, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West-Pokot, Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Busia and Migori counties.

In the North-western Kenya (Turkana and Samburu Counties), there will be morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms are expected over few places.

The Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi County) (Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi and Nairobi Counties) will have intermittent cloudiness, with light rains over few places.

The mornings will have sunny intervals with afternoon and night showers expected over few (mostly high ground) areas.

Additionally, Met stated that the North-eastern Kenya (Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo Counties will have sunny intervals during the day while nights are likely to be partly cloudy.

"However, morning rains may occur over some parts of Marsabit County," Met added.
