Multi-agency security team staged an intelligence-led operation on al Shabaab base in the Alango area of Garissa County harbouring Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) experts and seized several materials.

The Saturday, July 27 incident is the latest in the area seen as the breeding ground for the terrorists targeting places in the region.

Police said the seizure happened along Garissa-Dadaab Road.

According to police, two suspected al-Shabaab terrorists were killed in the ambush.

The militants were at an advanced stage of the attack at a hideout in a forested area South of Alango waiting for an opportune moment to strike when they were ambushed.

However, security forces disrupted their plans, killing two suspects on the spot while others escaped with injuries.

Among the items recovered from the hideout were two AK47 Rifles, seven magazines, and making materials among other assorted food items.

Police said security teams are on the trail of the fleeing militants.

Meanwhile, the general public is encouraged to share information with security officers on the injured suspects should they be sighted, police appealed.

On March 24, 2024, an ambush on a similar hideout in the same area recovered IED-making materials, an AK47 rifle, two magazines, porches and assorted foodstuffs.

The three experts assembling the explosives managed to escape, police said.

The team was Sunday pursuing the gang saying “we hope to get them for justice”.

This comes months after five suspected al shabaab militants were killed in an operation in Fafi, Garissa County.

The intelligence-led operation caught the militants by surprise as they crossed into Kenya and established a temporary camp in the Fafi area of Garissa.

Police say the area is being used as a logistics base for the terrorists who move to attack targets and retreat there.

This comes in the wake of reports the terror gang has been sending their members to Kenya in the past month in readiness for an attack.

Police say they have upped their operations in the area to tame the plans for the attacks.

Several planned attacks have been stopped in the past months due to ongoing operations.

The area is near the Kenya- Somalia border where the terrorists cross and launch attacks inland.

A major operation is ongoing in the area to address al-Shabaab-related attacks, which happen because of others, the proximity to the main Kenya-Somalia border.

The area near the border with Somalia has suffered a series of terrorist attacks.

The terrorists have been attacking places near the Kenyan border by using guns and explosives leaving dozens dead and many injured.

The recent attacks have forced the government to suspend plans to reopen the Kenya-Somalia border.
