Fazul Abdallah Mohammed

The 1974 born Kenyan-Comoran islamist publicly confessed his links with al Qaeda and close ties with Osama bin Laden.

He carried out tasks for the group from Mogadishu in Somalia. He also took part in multiple training sessions with Bin Laden.

He was crowned leader of the al Qaeda East Africa network after Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan was killed by the US Seal team while driving towards Ras Kamboni.

In November 2009, he was coronated as commander of fighters in an open ceremony in Kismayu. It was during his acceptance speech that he acknowledged his role in the 1998 US Embassy bombing and praised his links with Bin Laden and the larger al Qaeda network.

"After Somalia we will proceed to Djibouti, Kenya, and Ethiopia,” he announced.

Under his watch he ordered the July 2010 attack on a Kampala restaurant during a World Cup match, killing 10 people.

He was killed in 2011 in Somalia when Somalia army officers stopped his car at a checkpoint and shot him dead in a gunfight.

Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan

Born in 1979 in Mombasa, the terrorist was killed in Somalia by a team of special US soldiers. He was the leader of al Qaeda in Somalia and was in the FBI list of wanted terrorists.

Nabhan is believed to have played a major role in the 2002 terror attack in Mombasa that involved an attempt to shoot down a flight destined for Tel Aviv.

He was using surface-to-air missiles to down the plane.

Declassified CIA files say he was the brain behind a daring, but failed, terror plot against the US Embassy in Nairobi in 2009.
