The exercise of collecting and verifying data from Marigoini residents in South B is expected to begin this weekend to pave the way for the construction of affordable houses.
Speaking on Wednesday, Gabriel Muli from Public Works said affected residents will be compensated to pave the way for the construction of the houses.
‘‘We have decided that Saturday and Sunday is when we conduct the verification exercise. The exercise is to compare the data we already have to seal possible gaps," Muli stated.
He added:
"This exercise is national following a presidential directive and no one should try to disrupt it."
Nairobi South B Ward MCA Waithera Chege urged residents to embrace the project saying it will benefit the majority of them warning that those who will attempt to block it will be stopped.
"We are going to protect everybody whether you are for or against the construction of houses because that is your right but we will not allow a few individuals to stop the project," Waithera warned.
One of the residents called on the government to be transparent and ensure that they get the houses once the construction is complete.
"Don’t be used to fight landlords' battles, let them fight their battles. We do not want this area to remain a slum through," he said.
President William Ruto’s housing pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda not only aims to improve the quality of life for people but also serves as an economic stimulus, promoting enterprise growth and job creation.
The overall target by the President is to construct 200,000 affordable housing units annually which will create between 600,000 and one million jobs.
