A police squad was sent to investigate murders in a case where two brothers were attacked and killed in a village in Butere, Kakamega County.
The two were attacked in their home by a mob that raided there, police said.
Police are concerned with the rising cases of mob lynching in the county and have called on authorities to launch a campaign to address the trend.
The latest incident which police term as murder happened in the Emuleche sub-location where a group of an unknown number of people invaded a homestead in Muyalala village on July 29 morning.
Police rushed to the scene and found the body of Thomas Apondi Shapaya, 47, lying in a pool of blood with deep cuts on his face and head outside his house.
His brother, also the village elder Fredrick Nangoya, 53, who had responded to rescue him was attacked and sustained deep cuts at the back of the head, the lower part of the spine as well as a stab on the chest.
Police said he was rescued and rushed to Butere County Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The motive of the attack was not yet established, police said.
Police said the bodies were moved to the mortuary pending investigations and autopsy.
Police say there has been a rise in mob lynching incidents in the area in the past month alone.
This has seen up to five people killed and many injured.
Police discourage mob lynching and term it criminal.
This is because the targeted victims are presumed innocent.
Police want suspects to be surrendered to authorities for processing and prosecution.
Experts blame the trend for the public's lack of trust in the legal system.
The team sent to the ground said they wanted to take action on all who participated in the attack amid tension and possible planned retaliation from the family members.
