Interior CS nominee Kithure Kindiki now says that at least 164 police and civilian vehicles were destroyed during anti-government protests.
Kindiki noted that 54 of these were police vehicles, while 110 belonged to members of the public.
Speaking during his vetting in Parliament, Kindiki said the protests also saw at least 42 Kenyans lose their lives.
The CS nominee went on to state that in the chaos that resulted from demos, some 486 civilians and 385 police officers sustained injuries.
He added that the police made over 1,387 arrests as well.
"We witnessed the death of 42 Kenyans, we also had 486 civilians and 385 police officers injured. 1387 arrests, 54 police cars destroyed and 110 motor vehicles belonging to the people of Kenya destroyed," Kindiki said as he appeared before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments.
He further noted that the reason he did not address the anti-government protests publicly while in office was because it was an operational issue.
He noted that the Police are independent and do not take directions from him on operational matters.
"The reason I didn't talk every day is because the events were mainly operational issues. The work of CS Interior as envisaged in Article 245 of the constitution is to give organs of National security policy direction on policy guidance," Kindiki said.
"The Police is under independent command. There are only two people who can give the IG directions. The CS Interior on Policy issues and DPP on matters investigations. Other than that operational matters are handled by the NPS."
