In a significant development for the city's healthcare sector, Governor Johnson Sakaja has confirmed the permanent employment status of doctors previously under the Nairobi Metropolitan Services.

The announcement comes after a crucial meeting with the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union national secretary general and CEO Davji Atellah.

The move marks a major step forward in recognising the vital contributions of medical professionals in Nairobi.

During the meeting, it was agreed that all 43 unconfirmed doctors, comprising of 35 medical officers and eight specialists, would be transitioned to permanent and pensionable (PnP) terms.

"These doctors are set to pick up their confirmation letters on August 12, 2024," Sakaja confirmed.

The decision ensures that all 115 medical officers and 18 specialists previously under NMS will now have permanent employment status.

In addition to this, Sakaja announced plans for new hirings, including 35 Medical Officers, 31 pharmacists, 20 dentists and eight specialists, further bolstering Nairobi's healthcare workforce.

The KMPDU expressed its gratitude to Sakaja for his cooperation and commitment.

"We sincerely thank Sakaja for recognizing the vital contributions of our medical professionals," KMPDU spokesperson said.

The decision is expected to enhance the stability and morale of the healthcare workforce, ultimately leading to better healthcare services for Nairobi residents.

Atellah said they are committed to ensuring no member is left behind.

"We sincerely thank Sakaja Johnson for his cooperation and commitment to recognizing the vital contributions of our medical professionals," he said.
