Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary nominee Opiyo Wandayi has said he did not apply for the post he is being vetted for.

Wandayi told the Parliamentary Committee on Appointments that it was improper the say that they had taken advantage of the Gen Zs clamour to get into government.

"I never applied to join the Executive, but I was pleasantly surprised and felt greatly honoured that my name was recommended," he said.

Wandayi said they are not in any way in betrayal of the youth.

He was answering a question by Kathiani MP Robert Mbui, over allegations that the nominees from the opposition side had taken advantage of the Gen Z protests for them to join the government.

"I am clear in my mind. The Gen Zs were not raising any different issues from the issues we have raised before. Therefore it is not proper to say we have taken advantage of the Gen Z demos to get into government,” he said.

"The issues that Gen Z were raising were very pertinent issues which must be dealt with. I still maintain the view that we are not in any way in betrayal of the youth. We are coming on board in a paradigm shift."

Following his naming by President William Ruto, the former Minority Leader said he would be honoured to serve the country as the CS Energy and Petroleum.

"It will be a great honour and privilege to serve my country in this new capacity if I secure the approval of the National Assembly. My gratitude to Baba," he stated.

Wandayi further thanked the Opposition leader Raila Odinga for his "enduring mentorship and tutelage."
